Detoxification practices are some of the
oldest health and beauty treatments on earth and are completely
natural. In fact, I consider the cleansing process to be the missing
link in Western nutrition and a key to the vitality of our
civilization. In my two decades of private practice, I have learned
that many health problems are caused by the build-up of toxic waste in
the body. We all know that our bodies require nourishment and oxygen,
and much emphasis is placed on putting the right things into our
bodies. Although often overlooked, it is equally important for waste
to leave your body efficiently.
Each year we are exposed to literally thousands of toxic chemicals and
pollutants in our air, food and water. These pollutants manifest
themselves in a variety of symptoms, including decreased immune
function, hormone imbalance, psychological disturbances and cancer.
Detoxification helps to rid our bodies of these chemicals and
pollutants and stimulate a return to optimum health. Toxicity has
become a great concern in the twenty-first century, and detoxification
must be part of your healthy lifestyle.
Detoxification is our body's natural
process of eliminating or neutralizing toxins via the body "filters:"
the liver, kidneys, bladder, colon, lungs, lymph and skin. As a
result of the petrochemical revolution, toxins have accumulated in the
human system faster than they can be eliminated. We are all carrying
around, in varying degrees, the residues of legal and illegal drugs,
industrial chemicals, pesticides, and food additives.
Obviously, the healthy human body can handle certain levels of toxins;
our concern is with the excessive intake of toxins or a reduction of
elimination. Toxicity occurs when we ingest more than we can utilize
and eliminate and seems to increase as we age. Many of our chronic
diseases and dilemmas result from this systemic congestion.
In principle, the way the body works is not that different from the
way a car works. In a car, dirty oil clogs the filters and thus
impairs the motor's function. If the oil were never changed, the car
would eventually grind to a halt. Over the years, most of us have
learned that the more we care for our car through regular maintenance,
the better it serves us.
When blood lacks oxygen and is polluted with chemicals and impurities,
a similar breakdown may be expected in our bodies. If you owned a
very expensive car, would you run it on the cheapest gasoline and
never change it's various plugs, hoses and filters? I doubt it, and
you deserve the same attention and care.
